| Customer Reviews: It's a journey... September 6, 2010 Any Mouse (USA) This product is exactly what I needed, a service nobody else in the big-company world is offering-- simple e-mail and text service. No voice-- this is not a telephone!
I had an argument (I lost, but was right on moral grounds!) with a big phone company and wanted a service with NO CONTRACT that provided me with on-the-go text and e-mail access, but didn't really care at all about voice telecommunication.
Peek is the only device I found so far that does just that. Any other service available includes voice and automatically charges for voice. I do not want to pay for what I do not intend to ever use.
The Peek device is easy-to-use. The service (they use T-mobile) is outstanding, at least here in New England! You'd have to check about your own receptivity, of course, but they are nationwide and also international.
It is affordable and so far, very reliable. I get my texts and my e-mails almost instantaneously, and can easily reply right away, no matter where I am.
The keypad is intuitive and easy-to-use, even for clumsy (from arthritis) fingers.
The screen display is readable-- print neither too small nor too large.
I do have one complaint, and that is that if you want the latest and best version of the Peek software, it is highly possible that you will have to upgrade it yourself, like I did. And the upgrade is not simple or easy, and tends to be fraught with technical difficulties... and worse yet, you have to buy a special cable for 14.99 to get the software upgrades-- or you can send your device away to have someone do it for you.
I got the cable (got the wrong one the first time and had to return it to get the correct one) and did the upgrade (ran into technical difficulties that shut down my Peek for an entire weekend!).
Now I am happy with my new Peek-- I love the price, the plan, and the service. I ADORE not having a contract!! But I will be quite honest and tell you that it was an uphill trek from getting the device and setting it up to getting the latest software and installing it so it works as advertised!
Nonetheless, being a bit of a techno geek anyway, and having time to fiddle around to see what works and what didn't, I recommend this device.
It is solid, it is reliable, it is amazingly affordable, it is stable (unless you try and upgrade it-- and once you conquor the upgrade, it is VERY stable!!!), it is easy to set up, it works immediately out-of-the-box, tech support is excellent, so go for it.
Like I mentioned, it does work well right out of the box, but if you decide to upgrade to the latest and the best, order the proper upgrade cable and then plan on a few hours of tense tweaking and fiddling to get it installed.
Then go and enjoy your reliable device and outstanding service.
Not quite cooked yet. Still in the oven. October 24, 2009 hdtravel (USA) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Although the idea is definitely unique - a simple email only device, the Peek is still not quite there yet.
It has been out over a year and still seems like a beta product. It is really a mixed bag.
Pros:
Small, thin design
Excellent, responsive customer service ( you never experienced anything like it ! )
Innovative idea
No contract
No hidden fees
No credit check
Cheaper email solution than the big bad cell phone companies
Cons:
Looks like a calculator or toy
Small screen that is hard to read ( low resolution, very limited font selection & size ). If you have older eyes, forget it.
No true IMAP syncing of your email
No true IMAP email folder support
No ability to view HTML emails ( so common these days ). Text based only !
Toy-like keyboard ( not high quality like a BlackBerry )
Limited selection of colors
No ability to receive over-the-air software updates ( you must send it to them in New York City or buy a special proprietary cable ) ( big design flaw )
Limited availability ( not sold in big box stores )
Unreliable email pushing ( some times it works fast and other times not at all ) ( speed varies by email provider too )
Not a true SMS ( texting ) experience. You do not receive a phone number other people can text you at.
Do you really want to carry another electronic device around with you ?
If I were you I would wait a while and see if they release a new version with improved software and capabilities. Skip this 1.0 product.
Peek is Great! But at this price point - go for lifetime service instead. October 8, 2009 Demand Curve (LA, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I used this to replace my iPhone. I know, it doesn't do much other than text and email - but that was all I was using my iPhone for... all the other stuff was just for passing time in the doctors waiting room ...
Overall the Peek is great - see below - but for Pet's sake - just spend the extra and go for lifetime service instead! No I am not a peek employee ... I just love the device and service.
Peek Pronto Mobile Messaging Device with Lifetime Service Included (Grey)
Pluses:
Simple.
-Up to 5 email accounts
-text all you want (they have recently improved texting)
-unlimited emails
-can do pics and pdfs, and word docs
-low to no monthly fees (my biggest +!!) - depends on service plan - go for lifetime !!!
-mapping / locating service at peekmaps.com (follow your Peek - very cool)
-lots of searches available via email
-great customer service
-works seamlessly with gmail and yahoo mail
-full keyboard
-fast delivery of email
-long battery times (mine goes 2+ days on 1 charge)
-holds minor contact info (1 per email address)
-can import address book directly from gmail, yahoo, etc
minuses:
- a little clunky on the text messaging: they now have a somewhat stationary number to send texts, but the person with the peek really needs to initiate the conversation. It works great once things are going ...
- documents and pictures are OK - but like all mobile devices - they don't always display perfectly
- exchange is supported - but if your server is using old version (2000-2003) it might not work
- typing on small keyboard (long messages are tough)
- only minor spell checking
- one more thing to carry
- the occasional email outage (in over 9 months this has happened 2 times with gmail) others report more often
- some people report slow performance - my experience has been great
- no alarm
- only holds minor contact info
The device really is simple and super easy to use. If you have a teenager that texts all the time - this might work. If you like simple devices that do their 1 thing and do it well - then this is great. if you are on the go a lot or don't want to be tethered to a computer for your email - then this is it.
If you are a mobile professional that needs to stay in constant email contact - then this device rocks. Especially at the lifetime price point. If I have the monthly fee - it kills it for me.
Lifetime Peek = happy guy. Year plan is better than wireless - but with lifetime option - it just makes better sense over the longer haul.
you should browse their forum - the company lets people say whatever they want - and their employees are very responsive to customers. They are always in the forums ... over at [...].
